Roy Earl (Buddy) Sullivan, Jr. was born in 1946 to Roy Earl Sullivan (b. 1921) and Mary Kate Hunter (1924-1954) in McIntosh County, Georgia. He received his bachelor's degree in history from LaGrange College, Georgia. Sullivan has served as manager of the Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve since 1993. He lectures and writes on topics relating to coastal Georgia history, specifically Georgia maritime history, tidewater rice cultivation, 17th century Spanish settlement in coastal Georgia, 19th century lumbering industry, colonial settlement, and other topics. Sullivan's honors and awards in the field of Georgia history include the Governor's Medal in the Humanities from the Georgia Humanities Council in 2005, the Sarah Nichols Pinckney Volunteer Award presented by the Georgia Historical Society in 2010, Lilla M. Hawes Award from the Georgia Historical Society in 2000, National History Award Medal from the Daughters of the American Revolution in 2000, the Jefferson Davis Gold Medal from the Georgia United Daughters of the Confederacy in 2000, and a Certificate of Commendation from the American Association for State and Local History in 1999. He served on the board of curators of the Georgia Historical Society from 1996 to 2007 and is a member of the United States Naval Institute. Sullivan has authored more than thirty books, pamphlets, and papers including: Sapelo: A History (1988, 2003); Tabby: A Historical Perspective of an Antebellum Building Material in McIntosh County, Georgia (1998); Early Days on the Georgia Tidewater: The Story of McIntosh County and Sapelo being a Documented Narrative Account, with Particular Attention to the County's Waterway and Maritime Heritage, Plantation Culture and Uses of the Land in the 19th Century, and a Detailed Analysis of the History of Sapelo Island (1990, 1992, 1995, ); The Darien Bank: A Celebration of 100 years 1889-1989 (1989); Georgia: A State History (2003); Memories of McIntosh: A Brief History of McIntosh County, Darien & Sapelo (1990); Darien and McIntosh County (2000); Richmond Hill (2006); From Beautiful Zion to Red Bird Creek: A History of Bryan County, Georgia, Including Chronicles of the Old Canoochee-Ogeechee River Country (2000); and Sapelo Island (2000).

This collection contains personal papers and research materials of Buddy Sullivan dating from 1800 to 2012. Materials include articles, awards, books, book reviews, CD, census records, clippings, correspondence, deeds, DVD, journals, land grants, microfilm, photographs, photocopies, reports, and slides. Papers relate to Sullivan's career as a professional sports writer and editor and his writings on coastal Georgia.
Also included are 112 maps and drawings collected by Sullivan of coastal Georgia dating from 1819 to 1995. The maps and drawings are photocopies and reproductions of originals created by the U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey, State Highway Board of Georgia, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Department of Transportation, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Originals of the maps are housed at the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) and other repositories.
The collection was arranged and folder/divider numbers assigned by Buddy Sullivan prior to donation. The folder/divider description within each box was largely written by Sullivan with some information added or edited by the processor.

Box 1: Contains folders 1-22. FOLDER 1 contains a brief history of Sullivan's family and his most recent Curriculum Vitae. The CV includes a listing of his books, publications and articles, his honors and awards in the field of Georgia history, and selected important lectures, all up to the time of submission of his papers to the Society in February 2012. FOLDERS 2-6 contain personal and professional correspondence, 1968 to February 2012 including originals of incoming correspondence, in addition to copies of some outgoing correspondence. The several documents from 1968 to 1985 primarily comprise letters relating to his career as a professional sports writer and editor for several daily newspapers in Georgia, including LaGrange Daily News, Columbus Enquirer and Savannah Morning News. Among these documents are communications from University of Georgia athletic officials, including Head Coach and Athletic Director Vince Dooley, and other letters relating to Sullivan’s coverage of University of Georgia football and college football in general. The documents from 1986 to 1993 are in relation to historical research, Sullivan’s work as editor of the Darien (GA) News, and communications relating to the publication of Sullivan’s first books about the history of McIntosh County, Sapelo Island and coastal Georgia in general. Communications in the folders from 1993 to 2012 comprise letters to and from a variety of persons in relation to Sullivan’s directorship of the Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve (SINERR), his tenure on the Georgia Historical Society (GHS) Board of Curators from 1996 to 2007, correspondence relating to Sullivan’s chairmanship of the Marker Review Committee of the Georgia Historical Society from 2000 to 2010, correspondence relating to the publication of additional of his books on the history of coastal Georgia, including two edited and annotated rice journals, the coastal timber industry, comprehensive histories of McIntosh and Bryan counties, a state history of Georgia under the auspices of the GHS, and communications related to various honors and awards associated with his career as a professional historian of coastal Georgia 1986-2012. Much of the material in regard to the author’s books is in association with his comprehensive Early Days on the Georgia Tidewater, published in six editions from 1990 to 2002. Some of the correspondence in this collection is written to Sullivan from state and national political figures, including several governors, various colleagues and acquaintances in the historical profession, officials and board members of the GHS, state and federal governmental officials relating to the business and operation of the SINERR, and others. FOLDERS 7-10 contain assorted newspaper and magazine articles and other documents relating to Sullivan’s career as a Georgia historian from 1986 to 2012. The folders also contain documents relating to special programs and events, articles and documents relevant to honors and awards achieved by Buddy Sullivan, information about a number of his lectures and programs, and publicity relating to the author’s books and other publications, including the project by which he researched and wrote a survey of the history of Georgia under the auspices of the Georgia Historical Society in 2003, Georgia: A State History. FOLDER 11 contains materials relating to Sullivan's presidency of, and other activity with, the Lower Altamaha Historical Society, Darien, Georgia, from 1995 to 2010. FOLDER 12 contains personal papers relating to the publication of Sullivan's book about the history of Bryan County, Georgia, From Beautiful Zion to Red Bird Creek, and being awarded GHS’ Lilla Hawes Award for local history in 2001, and other documents relating to the author and his historical research of the Richmond Hill area.
FOLDERS 13-16 contain miscellaneous writings by Buddy Sullivan, including articles, book reviews, booklets and pamphlets, and papers for journals and magazines, etc. The writings are associated with various aspects of coastal Georgia history and ecology, written from 1995 through 2012. These folders include his booklets and papers on the history of Sapelo Island, the use of tabby as a building material on the coast, the antebellum Darien cotton port and waterfront, the hurricane of 1898, a booklet on the history of the antebellum Ashantilly House at Darien and the texts of Sullivan’s 14 articles in the New Georgia Encyclopedia. Additionally there are magazine articles written by Sullivan on aspects of history in Richmond Hill, primarily relating to the Henry Ford era (1925-1947) in Bryan County, and Sapelo Island. Several of the papers written by Sullivan included here are one establishing the connectivity of the ecology of the coast with its cultural history and development, the architecture of historic buildings on Sapelo Island, and a paper about settlement patterns and land use on Sapelo Island 1865-1970. Also included in the file is a book written by Sullivan on the story of University of Georgia football during the Coach Vince Dooley era, published after UGA’s national football championship in 1980.
FOLDERS 17-22 contain miscellaneous papers and research materials relating to the history of Bryan County, Georgia. The folder contains miscellaneous items accumulated during the research and writing of From Beautiful Zion to Red Bird Creek: A History of Bryan County, Georgia. Included are census records, land grant and land deed records from the county archives, copies of memoirs and letters gleaned from the holdings of the Georgia Historical Society, the state archives and local archives. There are local church histories, cemetery records and information about early settlement patterns in upper Bryan County during the 19th century and on those lands of Bryan that ultimately became a portion of the Fort Stewart Military Reservation. There is also a folder containing an accounting of the acquisition of large tracts of land in lower Bryan County and the Richmond Hill area by Detroit automotive pioneer Henry Ford during the 1920s and 1930s, as well as materials entailing various other aspects of Ford’s activities in lower Bryan County., Box 2: Contains divider 23 and folders 24-27.
DIVIDER 23 contains assorted materials relating to research on the history of Bryan County, including information about antebellum plantation families and activities associated with rice cultivation in the Ogeechee River region, railroad development in Bryan County, public education and assorted written memorabilia by early and long-established families and personages of the county, including the Savage, Clay, McAllister, Arnold, Rogers, Way, Maxwell, Harn and other early families of the county. There are a number of spiral-bound archaeological reports with considerable historical information about Bryan County. The reports relate to Ogeechee River rice tracts of the Savage, Clay, McAllister and Arnold families, and a number of reports relating to the historical archaeology of that portion of Bryan and Liberty counties now comprising the Fort Stewart military reservation.
FOLDERS 24-27 contain research materials on McIntosh County and Darien, Georgia, including materials on post offices and postal notes, 1850s-1940s., Box 3: Contains folders 28-29, divider 30, and a portion of divider 31.

DIVIDER 30 contains a collection of McIntosh County historical papers, including collected letters of various families, cemetery records, a history of Harris Neck, documents related to the 1992 local observance of the 500th anniversary of the landing of Columbus and the theorized colony of deAyllon in what is now McIntosh County, documents related to antebellum plantations of the county with several archaeological reports, and various other materials related to the history of Sapelo Island and Darien.
DIVIDER 31 contains copies of the Minutes of the Darien Pilots Commission 1874-1930 (published and edited in Sullivan’s 2009 book, High Water on the Bar), records of the U.S. Army Air Field at Harris Neck during World War II, McIntosh County records, 1800-circa 1998, and archaeological reports regarding Fort King George.

DIVIDER 31 contains archaeological reports on the comprehensive excavations and historical research of the Darien waterfront district, a state survey report of the lower Altamaha River, copies of the Sessional records of the Darien Presbyterian Church 1821-1870, and Butler's Island materials. DIVIDER 32 contains copies of McIntosh County land records and land plats copied from the county deed books. These papers establish chains of title for many of the antebellum and postbellum plantation and agricultural tracts in McIntosh County and on Sapelo Island; also, land deed records associated with the development of railroads in the county, the naval stores and timber activity in the western section of the county and the dredging of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway through the county in the early 20th century.
FOLDERS 33-39 contain documents relating to the history and archaeology of Sapelo Island, Georgia including the restoration of the Sapelo Island Lighthouse in 1998-1999, copies of papers relating to Vincent Dooley and his hosting a meeting of national college athletics directors on Sapelo Island in 1982, records of the Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve during the directorship of Buddy Sullivan 1993-2012, and assorted papers relating to the private ownership of the island by Thomas Spalding (1802-1851), Howard E. Coffin (1912-1934), and Richard J. Reynolds, Jr. (1934-1969).
DIVIDER 40 contains materials relating to the history of Sapelo Island, accumulated by Buddy Sullivan pursuant to his research of the history of the island from 1985 to 2012. Included are archaeological reports on Native American and Spanish Mission sites on the north end of the island, Behavior Cemetery report, Charles Spaulding Wylly materials, a collection of the writings of Thomas Spalding, antebellum plantation owner of Sapelo, assorted Spalding family memorabilia, including memoirs and family records, three papers written by Buddy Sullivan: Land Use and Land Ownership 1865-1970 on Sapelo Island, 200 Years of Historic Architecture on Sapelo, and Ecology as History on Sapelo Island; and other materials on the island’s history., Box 5: Contains a portion of divider 40.
DIVIDER 40 contains materials relating to the history of Sapelo Island, accumulated by Buddy Sullivan pursuant to his research of the history of the island from 1985 to 2012. Included are archaeological reports on Native American and Spanish Mission sites on the north end of the island, copies of the post-Civil War Spalding family business records contained in Collection 750 of the Georgia Historical Society, a photostat copy of the Sapelo Journal of Archibald C. McKinley 1869-1876, Also included is Sullivan’s annotation of the McKinley Journal contained in his comprehensive history of the island in Early Days on the Georgia Tidewater, published in six editions 1990-2001 with new material added to each edition, much of it related to Sapelo Island., Box 6: Contains a portion of divider 41.
DIVIDER 41 contains materials related to the history of coastal Georgia. This is a large assortment of papers, materials and copies of records that is primarily comprised on coastal Georgia outside of that of McIntosh and Bryan counties and Sapelo Island. Some of the subjects contained in these materials relate to antebellum rice and Sea Island cotton cultivation, archaeological reports from work conducted in Camden County and St Marys, Georgia, and various records copies of documents relating to Ossabaw, St. Simons, Savannah, Brunswick and Midway. Also included are materials on barrier islands rice culture, including plantations in Georgia and Florida and a 2003 publication entitled 'Low Country Gullah Culture.', Box 7: Contains a portion of divider 41 and divider 42.
DIVIDER 41 contains materials related to the history of coastal Georgia. This is a large assortment of papers, materials and copies of records that is primarily comprised on coastal Georgia outside of that of McIntosh and Bryan counties and Sapelo Island. Some of the subjects contained in these materials relate to antebellum rice and Sea Island cotton cultivation, and various records copies of documents relating to Jekyll, Ossabaw, Cumberland, and Wassaw islands. Also included are materials on 1881 and 1898 hurricanes.
DIVIDER 42 contains papers and reports related to the maritime history of coastal Georgia, comprising part of the research by Buddy Sullivan for his various books on coastal Georgia history, which contain the coast’s maritime heritage as a major theme. Included in this collection are copies of reports from the United States Coast Survey relating to Georgia in the 19th and early 20th centuries, copies of records of the activities of the federal quarantine station at Blackbeard Island 1880-1910, documentation of the operations of the Sapelo Island Lighthouse 1819-1933, a copy of an 1885 Georgia navigational coast pilot, a copy of the detailed survey of oyster beds on the Georgia coast conducted in 1889 by the U.S. Coast Survey, and other records. Also included is DVD entitled, 'Sapelo: An Island in Time' and the following records on microfilm: Register of Light House Keepers of the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts, 1845-1912, U.S. Light Lists for the South Atlantic Coast, 1900, 1925, McIntosh County Tax Digests for 1825 and 1837, and McIntosh County Ordinary Tax Returns for 1862. DIVIDER 43 with materials and papers related to the professional sports writing career of Buddy Sullivan 1968-1984. These materials comprise surviving records of his work with daily newspapers in Georgia (LaGrange, Columbus and Savannah) and are largely associated with his work with, and association with, the University of Georgia and its football program under Coach Vince Dooley. Also included in this section are materials on the breaking of Babe Ruth’s home run record by Henry ('Hank') Aaron of the Atlanta Braves in 1974, the Masters golf tournament, professional sports in Atlanta, etc., Box 9: Contains loose materials and two green letter boxes. Letter box one contains an assortment of photographs and reprints of photographs of coastal Georgia, mostly covering a period 1890 thro0ugh 1940. The bulk of these images are related to the research by Buddy Sullivan for his histories of Bryan and McIntosh counties and Sapelo Island and many are contained in his various books and publications about coastal Georgia history. The other letter box contains a comprehensive collection of materials, copies of government documents and reports, and numerous images, all related to lighthouse history and lighthouse operations on the Georgia coast, particularly those on Sapelo, Tybee Island and St. Simons Island. Loose materials include a partial assortment of booklets and short books by Buddy Sullivan; a loose leaf binder of black and white photographs of Sapelo Island during the ownership of Howard Coffin 1912-1934 (glossy copies made from originals in the Howard Coffin archives at the Sea Island Company), and three books containing genealogical materials extracted from the Darien Gazette newspaper relating to Darien and McIntosh County during the 19th century., Box 10: Includes an appraisal of Richmond Hill Plantation, 1951; U.S. Coast Survey topographic maps of the coast, circa 1850-1900; and a 1928 newspaper reprint about the Cloister Hotel and the Sea Island, entitled Cloister Bells.
