Georgia's first state supported geological survey began in 1836 by State Geologist John Cotting and took four years to complete. A second survey did not occur until 1874, it was conducted by George Little and was completed in 1881. The third survey of The Geological Survey of Georgia was established in 1890 by J. W. W. Spencer and has run continuously since then under various names and departments. In 1943 it became the Department of Mines, Mining and Geology and was under the State Division of Conservation. In 1972 it moved to the Department of Natural Resources and in 1978 became the Georgia Geologic Survey under the Environmental Protection Division of the Department of Natural Resources.
