After World War II, Roy Grumman co-founded Grumman Aircraft Engineering which would later become Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation. The company wanted to create scaled-down airliners that would help facilitate the post-war economic boom through purpose-built business aircraft. The Gulfstream I was introduced in 1958. In 1967 the plant was moved to Savannah, Georgia to split its manufacturing into military and civilian divisions. In 1978 Allen E. Paulson (1922-2000) purchased Grumman American for $52 million to form Gulfstream American Corporation. After the 1982 acquisition of Rockwell International's aviation division it became Gulfstream Aerospace. Chrysler Corporation bought the company in 1985, during this time the Gulfstream IV made its first round the world flight and set records held until the 1990s. When Chrysler decided to sell Gulfstream in 1989 Paulson and Forstmann Little Co. purchased it back. Allen Paulson retired in 1992 but not after setting records and receiving numerous awards for aeronautics. In the late 1990s General Dynamics purchased Gulfstream. As of 2015 Gulfsream employs more than 16,000 people at 12 major locations and has produced more than 2,400 aircraft for customers around the world since 1958; it is Chatham County's top manufacturing employer as of 2014.
