Biography/Profile
John Graham (ca. 1718-1795) was a Lieutenant Governor of Georgia (information found in
Major Butler's Legacy
, by Malcolm Bell). Pierce Butler (1744-1822) was born in Ireland but later made his home in Charleston, South Carolina, where he married Mary Middleton, the daughter of Thomas Middleton. He was a major in the British Army, but resigned his commission before the Revolutionary War. He was adjutant general of the State of South Carolina, a representative in the state legislature, a representative to the Federal Constitutional Convention, and a U.S. Senator, 1789-1796 and 1802-1804. He died in Philadelphia in 1822.

This collection consists of two releases in fee from John Graham to Pierce Butler, 1774, for tracts of land on St. Simons Island that Butler purchased from Graham. One of the tracts of land was known as Hampton Point.
